Has the Time Come to Consider Downsizing?
*Article previously published in The Ponte Vedra Recorder, Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida
It seems that most people at some point in their lives experience the need to downsize their living situation. Whether you have recently become an empty nester, you are approaching or are well into your retirement years or you are just feeling the need to cut costs on the upkeep of a large property, most of us consider downsizing/rightsizing at some point in our lives. I’ve met with many people over the years who should be relocating to a more appropriately sized and manageable situation but are too overwhelmed by the effort required to move forward. Then there are those who are so emotionally tied to their house and belongings that they just can’t imagine leaving, even though they acknowledge that another setting would be better for their new lifestyle.
If this sounds like you, your parents or someone you know…all hope is not lost. There are realtors who specialize in finding age & size appropriate surroundings. If you have a loved one who the time has come that they are in need of moving into a senior living community, most have moving coordinators whose job is to help people deal with all aspects of the transition. There is also a growing list of downsizing/rightsizing specialists that work within all age demographics who are experts in identifying the correct pieces of furniture and accessories to take versus those to donate or pass along to family members. This task of editing ones life possessions can be very emotional for most of us at any age but let’s face it, all of your current possessions are not going to fit or even work style wise in a smaller space. Rely on professionals for help going through this process. A fresh set of eyes and the opinion of a professional who does not have the emotional attachment to your “things” can make all the difference in helping this process go as smoothly as possible. It’s a process but most people I have met with feel it was well worth the effort as they find they have more time to spend doing the things they want to do instead of staying on top of the constant upkeep and cost of a too large for their new lifestyle home.
I believe one of the keys to living a long and satisfying life is being in the proper environment for your situation and circumstances. This reduces the stress you place on yourself (and others) and can add to your enjoyment of life. Downsizing/Rightsizing can free up funds that can be put to more appropriate use.
