Longevity And Retirement Planning
(Previously published in Ponte Vedra Recorder, August 2015)
Continual advances in medicine and biotechnology will help in extending longevity for us all. As longevity continues to increase, retirement periods will become so protracted that many people will need (both from a financial and a psychological perspective) to pursue additional career opportunities, including those that may require further education. Living well into ones 90s and 100s will become commonplace in the near future.
We all understand the traditional life cycle of education, followed by work and retirement. Today, younger generations are experiencing this cycle on a repeated basis, i.e., they may experience this cycle multiple times during their lifetime rather than once as their parents or grandparents did. In short, they have to be flexible and understand that no job is forever, no career is forever, no retirement may be forever. The key to success in this new paradigm is to remain flexible, continually seeking to expand knowledge of changing circumstances and look to the future with optimism and excitement.
I meet people every day who are trying new things in retirement, working in new ways, pursuing education to prepare themselves for opportunities or just for the fun of it. If we are going to live in retirement for 25-30-35 years, why not make the most out of this time of life?
I help my clients think through retirement issues and develop plans that are suitable to their needs. I consider the entire picture as to what they would like to do at this stage in their lives and what, if any, changes need to be looked into to help them to achieve their goals. It would be my honor to meet with you regarding any questions or issues you may have regarding your retirement plans or the next stage of your life plans as I often refer to this time in life.
